Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of the holmium laser with percutaneous nephrolithotripsy for kidney calculi. Methods The holmium laser with percutaneous nephrolithotripsy was performed on 78 patients, 18 patients with staghorn stones ( average diameter 3.6 cm), 42 patients with single kidney pelvic or calyceal stones or UPJ stones ( average stone diameter 2.1cm), 18 patients with kidney pelvic and calyceal stones with ureterostones. The duration of stone surgery, stone free rate and complication and the days in hospital after operation were assessed. Results The mean duration of stone surgerywas 53 min, the stone free rate was 59.0% (46 /78) after the first session,20 patients underwent the second session, the stone free rate was 80.0% (16 /20). 2 cases failured,5patients had high fever,1 patient had pleural effusio after percutaneous nephrolithotripsy.The days in hospital after the operation was 4-17 days(mean 6.9 days) ConclusionsThe holmium laser with percutaneous nephrolithotripsy can fragments calculi quickly and reduces thelength of time of operation It is an effective and safe technique for kidney calculi.
