BackgroundHuman being need to spend about one-third of lifetime in sleeping, Nowadays,Insomnia Disease is a recurrent and common disease, severely influencing thehealth of people which can leads to the disability of emotion and activitiesof daily life. Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies not only have goodeffects on treating Insomnia Disease, but also emerge its advantages in thequality of life of Insomnia Disease patients. Because the difference betweenthe foundation of theory, the backgrounds of culture and society of the twomedical science systems. It is inappropriate to assess the treatmentsuperiority of Traditional Chinese Medicine, especially in the field of QOL.So we made the Questionnaire of Quality of Life on Insomnia Disease to tellus which way is better when we treat the disease in different ways. So theadvantage of TCM can be play to the full.ObjectiveDevelop a QOL questionnaire on Insomnia Disease with TCM features andevaluate effects of TCM on Insomnia Disease completely, impersonallyobjectively and systemically. It can provide methodological reference whichcan develop and screen diseases on the TCM pattern index as clinical outcomescale for other objectively and systemically.MethodsA theory model was build according to the definition of quality of lifefrom WHO, Based on reviewing the theory of Traditional Chinese medicine andthe related knowledge of Insomnia Disease. 177 patients were assessed with theinitial TCM Insomnia Disease QOL questionnaire in face-to-face form, we got the general data of patients and the items by statistics though SPSS12.0. Sixkinds of methods were applied including the method of frequency ofexperts' judgement, coefficient of variations, principal component analysisand factor stepwise regression. And assessed the reliability, validity andresponsiveness of the scale by QOL data from 69 patients of Insomnia Disease.ResultsThe final version of QOL of TCM questionnaire on Insomnia Disease including21 items, which were divided into five subscales, including functional,emotional, cognition, society and environment. And reliability, validity andresponsibility of the Insomnia special TCM scale of QOL were assessed.Conclusions1. The scale has good construct validity, high internal consistency and highreliability. Also is helpful to carrying on the individual treatment choiceand psychological counseling for Patients. 2. The scale provides a goodmethodological reference for other studies of TCM questionnaire developmentof QOL.
