| Objective To study the clinical features of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods A retrospective analysis was performed in 90 in-patients with IBD diagnosed in past5 years. Results 60 cases of Ulcerative colitis(UC) and 30 cases of Crohn's disease (CD) were analyzed according to the diagnostic criteria. The male to female ratio was 1.07-1.31. Abdominal pain, diarrhea and bloody stools were the most common symptoms both in UC and CD. 3(5%) of 60 UC were proctitis and 24(40%) were proctosigmoiditis, 7(12%) left-sided colitis, 24(40%) pancolitis, 2(3%)regional colitis. 25(42%) cases of UC had first episode, 21(35%) had chronic relapse and 10(17%) were of chronic persist type,3(5%) were of acute fulminant type. Among 30 patients with CD, the location of disease were ileitis 8(27%), colitis 10 (33%), ileocolitis 11(37%) and the uncommon lesion including duodenum 1(3%). The complications were more frequent in CD including ileus, fistula and perforation. The acute presentation of CD may mimic acute appendicitis. Conclusion Endoscopy is the most effective modality for diagnosing UC, diagnosis of CD should however undertake comprehensive assessment of clinical, endoscopic, radiological and operative data. |
