Objective: To explore the expression level of serous GH, IGF-â… and IGFBP-3 in the patients with breast cancer and to discuss the clinical significance. Methods: The serum samples of 50 patients with breast cancer and 20 patients with breast benign lesion were collected preoperatively in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University and Guangxi Tumor Hospital from Aug 1st, 2006 to Nov 14th, 2006. The other serum samples were collected from 17 healthy women who were accepting health examination in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University in Oct, 2006. All the serum samples were divided into breast cancer group, breast benign lesion group and control group. The expression level of serous GH, IGF-â… and IGFBP-3 of the samples were determined by ELISA. ER was determined by immunohistochemistry. All datas from the experiment were analyzed by SPSS13 package.Result: 1. The expression level of serous GH,IGF-â… or IGFBP-3 among breast cancer group, breast benign lesion group and control group was of no statistical difference(P>0.05). 2. Comparing the expression level of serous GH, IGF-â… or IGFBP-3 of the premenopausal and postmenopausal patients in each groups, the expression level of serous IGF-â… in premenopausal patients with breast cancer was higher than that of the postmenopausal ones (P=0.005), while there was no statistical difference in the expression level of serous GH or IGFBP-3 (P>0.05). The expression level of serous GH, IGF-â… or IGFBP-3 between the premenopausal and postmenopausal patients in the breast benign lesion group or control group was of no statistical difference. 3. Comparing the expression level of serous GH, IGF-â… and IGFBP-3 with clinicopathological parameter of breast cancer, the expression level of serous GH was associated with the tumor size and the ER expression (P=0.002,0.006, respectively). The expression level of serous IGF-â… was associated with the patients' age and the tumor size (P=0.040 ,0.010, respectively). The expression level of serous IGFBP-3 was associated with the ER expression (P=0.033). 4. Discussing the correlation among the expression level of GH,IGF-â… , IGFBP-3 and age, tumer size and ER expression of breast cancer patients, serous IGF-â… has negtive correlation with tumor size when the diameter of tumor was longer than 2 cm(r=-0.393, P=0.022). There was no correlation among the serous expression level of GH, IGF-â… or IGFBP-3 and age and ER expression of breast cancer patients. Conclusion: 1. The expression level of serous GH,IGF-â… or IGFBP-3 among breast cancer group, breast benign lesion group and control group is of no statistical difference(P>0.05).We conclude that serous GH,IGF-â… or IGFBP-3 levels may not be the good index for early diagnosis and antidiastole in breast cancer. 2. The serous level of IGF-â… is associated intimate with menstrual status. The expression level of IGF-â… in premenopausal breast cancer patients is higher than that of the postmenopausal ones. We conclude that there is a good association between serous IGF-â… level and regulation of endocrine in premenopausal breast cancer patients. 3. With development of breast cancer, the tumor size impacts on the serous levels of GH and IGF-â… . It indicates that there is a good association between the up-regulated expression of the serous level of GH or IGF-â… and the proliferation and progression of breast cancer. 4. There is a negative correlation between the serous level of IGF- I and the tumor size when the diameter of tumor is longer than 2 cm. It indicates that there is a good association between the serous levels of IGF-â… and the tumor size. Serous IGF-â… expresses actively in early breast cancer but inhibitingly in developing and advanced stage. It may be significant for the prognosis of breast cancer.
