Objective According to comparison of effect in Chinese medical herbs and western medicines in treatment on total international prostate symptom score (IPSS) and quality of life score (QOL) of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), to assess the impact of two different treatments on patients clinical effects and quality of life. To explore the factors of the improvement of QOL during the course of treatment, and supply references to clinical treats of BPH.Methods At present, IPSS and QOL scores, a symptom index for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) was developed and validated by a multidisciplinary measurement committee of the American Urological Association (AUA), have become a relevant measure of efficacy in clinical trials. Its use is spreading, and its importance is growing as a valid indicator of effectiveness of a treatment.93 patients at the out-patient clinic of Shandong Provincial Hospital were sampled as study objects with simple random sampling from March, 2006 to May, 2007. The study objects were divided randomly into two groups according to treating with different medicine and interviewed with I-PSS and QOL after 4 weeks. Survey data were analyzed with SPSS11.5 statistical analysis software. The main influencing factors were studied with chi-square analysis, t-test, analysis of variance. Through above analysis, the impact is evaluated of two different treatments on patients symptomatic changes and quality of life improvement.Results1. After 4 weeks treatment, I-PSS scores mean value of Chinese medical herbs group reduced from 15.33 to 11.51 (t=7.94, P<0.05) , and from 22.48 to 18.54 (t=8.89, P<0.05) in western medicines group. which were significantly reduced compared with pre-treatment in both groups, but there was no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups (t=-0.17, P>0.05) in the changes of Symptom Scores.2. After 4 weeks treatment, QOL scores mean value of Chinese medical herbs group reduced from 4.56 to 3.40 (t=10.10, P<0.05) , and from 4.46 to 3.83 (t=6.44, P <0.05) in western medicines group. which were significantly reduced compared with pre-treatment in both groups, and high significantly difference in the changes of quality of life (t=3.35, P<0.05) between them. It indicated patients treated with Chinese medical herbs can effectively improve quality of life.3. The high prevalence of anxiety and depression in them deserves clinician's more attention. The factors that influence the patients' QOL is multifactorial, the aim of clinical treatment is not only clinical rehabilitation, but also promotion of quality of life.Conclusion1. Both Chinese medical herbs and western medicines can effectively improve the total I-PSS and obstructive and irritative subscores in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, and the effect of two medicines have no difference (P>0.05).2. Chinese medical herbs have superiority over western medicines in the changes of Quality of life in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Chinese medical herbs...
