Objective: Understanding the current status of preschool children simple obesity and their adaptive behavior in Wuhan city; to explore simple obesity impact on adaptive behavior, so as to improve people's congnition about simple obesity and promote children's adaptive behavior. Methods: Subjects for this study were preschoolers attending 3 kindergartens in Wuchang district of Wuhan city. They were selected by cluster sampling from April 17th 2006 to May 11th 2006. Parents were administered the"Child Adaptive Behavior Scale (CABS)". And base on the record of children growth, to describe the current status of preschool children simple obesity and their adaptive behavior. 112 simple obesity children were selected as case. Applying 1:2 matched case-control study, each case was individually matched with two controls (normal children), to find out simple obesity impacting on adaptive behavior. Results: (1) There were 506 boys and 403 girls in 909 preschool children. The gender ratio was 1.26:1. Children's obesity incidence was 14.30 percent, and boys'incidence was higher than girls'.The difference of obesity incidence was not significant in children with different age.(2) 98.13 percent children's adaptive behavior level was normal and higher. The girl's scores of adaptive behavior quotient, independence factor, society/self-control factor, self-care, language development and individual orientation scale were higher than boys'. Children with different age were different in adaptive behavior. The scores of adaptive behavior quotient, independence factor, congnition factor, self-care, language development, society responsibility and space-time orientation scale all increased as children grew.(3) 1:2 matched case-control study showed that simple obesity children's scores of adaptive behavior quotient, 3 factors and 8 sole scales were lower than normal children's, and all differences were obvious. Moderate and severe obesity had obvious effect on preschool children's adaptive behavior. Simple obesity was the risk factor of children's adaptive behavior. Conclusion: Simple obesity's incidence of preschool children was high at home; most children's adaptive behavior developed well, and children with different sex, age had different adaptive behavior. Simple obesity could result in low adaptive behavior. So many kinds of means should be taken to control simple obesity and eliminate the obstacle in the development of adaptive behavior, in order to promote children's adaptive behavior.
