Clinical Diagnosis And Treatment Of Persistent Hyperplastic Primary Vitreous (PHPV) (Six Case Reports)

ObjectiveTo investigate the diagnosis and treatment of PHPV,and analyze the possible mechanism of its onset.To make the diagnosis and treatment promptly and individually.MethodsCases of PHPV in the inpatients of the 2nd Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University from August 2006 to August 2008 were studied;We searched the PubMed database of the National Library of Medicine online using all related terms(Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous;Leukocoria;Coat's disease;Microphthalmia;Strabismus;Posterior hyaloid membrane;Retinoblastoma).We hadn't search offline in journals before 1980. We critically reviewed the voluminous literature and analyzed the causes,diagnosis and treatment of PHPV. ResultsIn the two years from August 2006 to August 2008.There were six cases(7 eyes ) of PHPV,four of which associated with cataract,one(2eyes )of which associated with cataract,glaucoma,and one of which associated with retinal detachment.There are few reports in the literature of PHPV.The mechanism was reported to be associated with abnormal development of primary vitreous.Conclusion(1) PHPV results from an incomplete regression of the embryonic vitreous and hyaloid vasculature.(2) Three characteristics of PHPV are Cataract,glaucoma and retinal detachment.(3) The main treatment of PHPV is surgery.We also should treat the patients individually.
