The Relationship Between Depressive Symptom And Health-Related Quality Of Life In Parkinson's Disease

Objective: This cross-sectional study was to explore the related factors of depressive symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) and health-related quality of life, in order to study further the relationship between depressive symptom and quality of life in PD.Methods: We have built clinical database, with a sample of PD patients (n=151). Furthermore, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, PDQ-39, UPDRS, MMSE, H-Y stages, Parkinson's disease sleep scale, ADL and so on were evaluated in this sample. A multivariate analysis was carried out to determine the factors that best accounted for the occurrence of PD with depressive symptom and health-related quality of life in PD.Results: Prevalence of PD with depressive symptom was 29.1%, possible PD with depressive symptom was 52.3%. Anxiety, UPDRSâ… , PDQ-39 and UPDRSâ…£were the significant factors accounted for the occurrence of PD with depressive symptom. Our survey also indicated that PD with depressive symptom severely affected the quality of life in PD patients. The quality of life in possible PD with depressive symptom and PD with depressive symptom groups were affected to different degrees.Conclusion: PD with depressive symptom was gradually recognized by physicians with its high prevalence. As quality of life and depressive symptom are deteriorated by each other, some interventions are urgently required to improve the quality of life, especially in this significant portion of possible PD with depressive symptom. We should pay more attention to the improvement of non-motor symptoms especially depressive symptom. We also emphasize here the importance of large scale randomized controlled trials examining the efficacy and safety of antidepressants in PD patients.
