[Objective]To investigate the incidence and clinical value of low serum creatinine in patients with critical illness.[Method]Data of patients admitted into intensive care unit(ICU) from May 2007 to April 2008 were collected and analyzed in order to find the incidences of low serum creatinine. All patients were divided into low serum creatinine patient group and normal serum creatinine group. The differences in length of ICU stay were compared between two groups and analyzed with linear and logistic regression analysis.[Result]Of 113 patients,23.9%had low serum creatinine on admission and 53.1% got low serum creatinine during the period of ICU stay. The length of ICU stay with low serum creatinine increased in average by 23.124 days as compared with that of patients with normal serum creatinine(after standardized,0.452 days,p<0.005).However,there was no significant differences in outcome between two groups(p=0.764).Except assisted ventilation, the medical treatments such as central vein cannulaiton, and blood and albumin transfusion given to patients of both groups were not associated with level of low serum creatinine.[Conclusion]Low serum creatinine often occurs in patients with critical illness and is a potential factor associated with longer ICU stay.
