| The first medical literature which recorded formulas of Traditional Chinese Medical Cosmetology is "52 formulas", which was formed in the Warring States Period. Only 13 formulas for Traditional Chinese Medical Cosmetology with a few herb medicines and rough dosage were recorded. The "52 formulas" glassed the therapy situation of beauty-impaired diseases in early stage. Besides, there are some other medical books like "Health formulas" and "Differentiate formulas" in Ma Wang Dui recorded formulas of health promotion having beauty efficacy. These formulas are not disciplinarily beauty formulas, however, they brought late generations precious pharmacy experience on beauty and health-promotion formulas. In "Shen Nong's Herbal Classic", many herb medicines with beauty efficacy are recorded, which are often introduced into beauty formulas of Chinese medicine by late generations.Through the chaos caused by the wars and disruption in late West and East Jin Dynasties, the country reached reunification and a stable situation in The Sui and Tang Dynasty, which was prosperous period of blending of Chinese nations and culture exchanges. Social economy, culture, scientific technology, medicine, as well as beauty field were developed a lot. Beauty formulas of Chinese medicine here with sufficiently progressed. Before West Jin dynasty, books that recorded beauty formulas of Chinese medicine and the quantities of beauty formulas of Chinese medicines were rare. It was at last looking up after West Jin dynasty. In the Period of the Sui and Tang Dynasties, due to the social stability and unity, the medical communication between China and abroad became prosperous, so some great medical books which gather the essence of ancient and modern, such as Zeng quan's "Ancient and modern formula", Sun Simiao's "Valuable Prescription for Emergencies" and "Valuable Prescriptions" and Wang Dao's "Medical Secrets of an Official" etc, and various Chinese medicine beauty formulas are recorded in these books. Sun's "Valuable Prescription for Emergencies" and "Valuable Prescriptions" have developed beauty formulas like "face medicine" and "face medicine for women" , which were the first beauty formula literatures among the existing medical books of Jin and Tang Dynasty, among others, "Valuable Prescription for Emergencies" keeps a record of 168 beauty formulas and "Valuable Prescriptions" 81 formulas. Wang Dao's "Medical Secrets of an Official" especially opens one volume for collecting various beauty formulas, and this book keeps a record of 342 beauty formulas, which is the medical book recording most beauty formulas and varieties from the Jin and Tang dynasty. In the Sui and Tang dynasty, especially in the Tang dynasty, beauty formulas had become very popular. At that time, there were not only abundant medical formulas which were effective to various beauty damage diseases, medical care and beauty formulas were also very emphasized, therefore make up products related to beauty formulas gained great development.The popularity of beauty formulas in the Jin and Tang Dynasty is not only the result of inheriting and absorbing the beauty formula experiences before the West Jin Dynasty, but also the achievement of basing on the modern medical practice and innovation. Among the existing medical books before the West Jin Dynasty, only "52 formulas" recorded a few of beauty formulas, but some experiences such as perscriptions combinations, medicines, formulations and quantity were still absorbed and developed by the beauty formulas in Jin and Tang Dynasty. A lot of medicines having beauty effect recorded in "Shen Nong's Herbal Classic" were also widely used in the beauty formulas in the Jin and Tang Dynasty. Comparing with the time before The West Jin, the beauty formulas in the Jin and Tang Dynasty have a lot of innovative formulas, which can treat more beauty damage diseases, meanwhile, all sorts of medical care beauty formulas were also more abundant, and herbal formula, formula form all had new development. The doctors in the Jin and Tang Dynasty emphasized Clinical Practice very much, apart from absorbing and learning the formula experiences from doctors before them, but also paid much attention to collect the modern formulas from civilians, minority groups and abroad, and also combined their own clinical experiences then made development and innovation.One feature of the Chinese medical beauty formulas in the Jin and Tang Dynasty is closely mixed with make up. Before the West Jin Dynasty, although make up had had some developments, and also had a trend of combining with Chinese medical beauty formulas, the close combination of them did not realize until the Jin and Tang Dynasty, which could be not only shown from the make up record in some medical books from Tang Dynasty such as "Valuable Prescriptions" and "Medical Secrets of an Official", but also shown in that treatment medicines were added in make up based on Chinese medical Prescriptions principles and the combination of Chinese medical beauty formulas and make up. The combination of Chinese medical beauty formulas and make up not only enlarged the application scale of Chinese medical beauty formulas and benefited in the creation of new formula form, meanwhile, it also made the make up not only limited to make the face more beautiful but also having beauty effect from medical care perception.In the Jin and Tang Dynasty, although the Chinese medical beauty formulas had been extended and developed, it was still in the test peroid, most of the formulas were from the doctors' experience summary and effective formulas collected from civilians, therefore, most formulas did not have their own name and only affiliated to the medical treatment. Formulas emphasize the combination of internal and external, and focused on external formulas. The medicine usage had a feature of Pictograph and the Application of Aromatic Drugs was another feature. The favorite of aromatic drugs caused great influence in the later generations, especialy grealty affecting the beauty formulas in Song Dynasty and even the whole formulas.In a word, with the development of the social economy and culture, and the extention in the communication between all the races and with abroad, the formula usage scale and formula experience had been extended in Jin and Tang dynasty. The medical development enables the doctors during this time to have great development and innovation basing on absorbing the predecessors's experiences, plus the development of the aesthetic ideas, making the Jin and Tang dynasty becomes a properous period in the history of beauty formula development. |
