Background:Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy character-rized by retinal ganglion cell loss. The therapeutic goat of glaucoma is to preserve visual function.Although, people haven't worked out the effectual measures to protect optic nerve. Neuroprotection is a novel strategy for treating glaucoma by preventing the death of RGCs.Past years traditional Chinese medicine had been applied to neuroprotection and had a certain acheivement. The whole plant of Tribulus Terrestris L.contains active substances as saponin, flavone, alkaloid, polyhexose, etc al.GSTT(Gross Saponin of Tribulus Terrestris),as the main ingredient, can lower lipidemia, prevent lipid deposit of artery and myocardium, prohibit plaque aggregation, protect ischemia and reperfusion injury of heart. Objective:To observe the effects of GSTT parameter of retina in rabbit eyes with Hyper-intraocular Pressure(HIOP).Methods:15 healthy NZ rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups: normal control group;HIOP untreated group;HIOP with GSTTtreated group.HIOP was induced by 20g?L-1methylcellulose injection into the anterior chamber with HIOP and GSTT group.GSTT group was injected 5 mg/kg GSTT and measured intraocular pressure with Schiotz tonometer every day, before killing after 28 days, the rabbits were sacrificed and the globles were excavated for study SOD/NO/apoptosis/ultrastructure.Result:Compared with those testing criterions, the statistical significance was found in three groups(P<0.05).Conclusion:GSTT may protect RGCs against HIOP and prevent it from apoptosis.
