Objectives:To analyse the relationship between matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9),lipoprotein(a)[Lp(a)]and acute coronary syndromes(ACS).To investigate if MMP-9 and Lp(a) take effect together in ACS.Methods:We addressed this issue in a case-control study in which 179 patients with documented ACS and 164 subjects without coronary heart disease(excluded by coronary angiography). The concentration of serum MMP-9 was measured by ELISA.The concentration of serum Lp(a) was measured at the same time.343 subjects were included in the present study. In the ACS group which had 179 subjects,85 patients suffered from acute myocardial infarction(AMI),and 94 patients suffered from unstable angina(UA).There were 164 subjects without coronary heart disease in concrol group.Results:(1)The concentration of serum MMP-9 in ACS(125.75±31.22ng/ml) was significantly higher than that in control(87.50±27.46ng/ml)(P<0.01).The concentration of serum Lp(a) in ACS(0.44±0.11g/L) was also significantly higher than that in control(0.30±0.08 g/L)(P<0.01).(2)The concentration of serum MMP-9 in UA(110.70±38.64 ng/ml) was significantly higher than that in control(87.50±27.46 ng/ml)(P<0.05).The concentration of serum MMP-9 in AMI(145.60±30.39ng/ml) was significantly higher than that in control(87.50±27.46ng/ml) and in UA(l10.70±38.64ng/ml)(P<0.01).The concentration of serum Lp(a) in UA(0.38±0.09g/L) was significantly higher than that in control(0.30±0.08g/L)(P<0.05).The concentration of serum Lp(a) in AMI(0.52±0.15g/L) was significantly higher than that in control(0.30±0.08g/L) and in UA(0.38±0.09g/L)(P<0.01).(3)Through binary logistic regression analysis MMP-9,Lp(a) and TC were confirmed to be risk factors for ACS(P<0.05).Linear correlation analysis showed MMP-9 related to Lp(a) in ACS(P<0.05). Conclusions:MMP-9 and Lp(a) both are related to ACS.The high levels of serum MMP-9 and Lp(a) are risk factors for ACS.If the levels of serum MMP-9 and Lp(a) ascend at the same time, the risk of ACS increases sharply. MMP-9 may cooperate with Lp(a) in ACS.They may initiate ACS together.
