Objective To examine the expression of Beta -catenin in intracranial aneurysms and analyze its possible relation with intracranial aneurysms formation, development and rupture. It is important to get some clues in early prevention and diagnosis of intracranial aneurysms. Methods There are control group and experimental group in the subject. 30 samples of intracranial aneurysms and 5 normal cerebral vessels as control samples were obtained in the operations . The ruptured aneurysms and the unruptured aneurysms were included in experimental group. All the specimens were immediately fixed in formalin for 24 hours after operation and embedded in paraffin for slicing. We uses immunohistechemistry technique to exame the expressions of Beta -catenin in different samples. All the stained sections were observed under the microscope and were statistically analyzing. Results The expression level of Beta -catenin in aneurysm wall were significently declined compared with brain normal vessels.Especially, there are only minimal expression in ruptued aneurysms. The expression of Beta -catenin in brain normal vessels were maximal strong staining intensity, graded as 3.0,and unruptured aneurysms were graded as 2.1, and ruptued aneurysms were 1.0. In the HE staining tissues, there are lots of inflammatory cells in aneurysm wall. Conclusions We infer that Beta -catenin may be involved in intracranial aneurysm formation and contribute to aneurysm rupture.
