Objective The relationship between psychological factors and ulcerative colitis (UC) is controversial. To study the role of psychological factors in ulcerative colitis, we carried through a questionnaire on psychological factors of UC patients diagnosed. Methods Eighty-six UC patients and eighty-six controls were compared on the follow psychological assessments:Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The difference of psychological assessments in severe, moderate and mild UC patients was also compared, and the relationship between sex, age, education, work, economic status of UC patients and the happening of anxiety and depression was investigated. SPSS13.0 was applied to the whole statistics process. Results The HAD assessments score of UC patients was apparently higher than the controls(P < 0.05). The HAD assessments score of severe UC patients was apparently higher than moderate and mild UC patients( P < 0.05),moderate UC patients higher than mild but the difference was not remarkble. The incidence rate of anxiety and depression of female UC patients was higher than that of male without significant discrepancy. The incidence rate of anxiety and depression of UC patients with different age section had no significant discrepancy and no statistically significant(P > 0.05). The happening of anxiety and depression was more easier for persons with high education degree than lower ones which had statistically significant(P < 0.05).The occurrence of anxiety and depression in different economic status had no statistically significant(P > 0.05). The anxiety and depression morbility was higher for mental labourer than manual worker ,which had statistically significant( P < 0.05).Conclusions The UC patients had psychological abnormity whose main appearance was anxiety and depression in different types, and the morbility was apparently higher than health adult. The psychological abnormity appearance of severe UC patients was more obvious than that of moderate and mild UC patients. There was no obvious dependablity between sex, age, economic status and the occur of anxiety and depression. It had positive correlation between the education degree of UC patients and the occur of anxiety and depression and the anxiety and depression morbility was higher for mental labourer than manual worker.
