Schistosomiasis is a widespread epidemic in Hunan and the spread regions in Hunan province mainly range in Dongting lake area .The disease has brought great harm to the production and living of people, and it is a serious impediment to the local socio-economic development.As a result of the Party and the state taking schistosomiasis seriously, Hunan has begun a vigorous work of schistosomiasis control since the founding of the state , but by the impact of national policies in different periods, the work of schistosomiasis control in Hunan experience ups and downs of the course. During the period 1966-1978, due to the "Cultural Revolution" seriously interfere with the ideological line of the extreme left, the work of schistosomiasis control in Hunan has been greatly impacted and causes huge losses. Of course, as the masses and schistosomiasis staff resolutely resist the ideological line, the work of schistosomiasis control in Hunan has made some achievements.At the initial stage of "Cultural Revolution" , schistosomiasis control in Hunan is seriously interfered by the extreme-leftist thinking line, schistosomiasis basically come to a halt, and come into chaos. In 1970,with the Central Party Committee issuing No.2 and No.49 document, the government attaches great importance to the work of schistosomiasis control again and issued a series of policies to restorate and develop schistosomiasis control, namely: the restoration and re-adjustment of the schistosomiasis control leadership and institutions, and gradually recover decentralized person; strengthen the building of schistosomiasis medical team and improve their professional business skills as to improve control quality; increase financial input; improve the treatment methods and tools for search, and continuously improve the level of medical technology; deeply and extensively pulicize schistosomiasis information, improve the cadres and masses' initiative and consciousness of schistosomiasis control; restore or develop correct control policy, on the medical treatment ,resumpt and develope the economic policies of the state, collectives, and individuals three share the burden;on the protection, promulgate the "three-cut", "four-cut" policy, implemente joint prevention and control in different regions;on the oncomelania, implement the policy of "who benefits, who oncomelania, classification management", and so on. At the same time, adopted a series of scientific and reasonable control measures, such as: strengthening the "two management" work, and actively carry out protection from schistosomiasis, establishing a reasonable system and methods of inspection and treatment, carry out large-scale survey movement; combinating the basic construction of water conservancy to eliminate the snail-based comprehensive control measures, large-scale masses movement of investigating oncomelania; and so on.By the enactment of policies to promote schistosomiasis control and the use of scientific and rational preventive measures, the work of schistosomiasis control in Hunan gradually return and develope, embarked on a course of rehabilitation, and have achieved certain results, such as: the schistosomiasis areas are narrowing, the extent of the epidemic are reducing, the enhancement of people's physique; significant changes in hygienic of the schistosomiasis areas, the quality of life improved; significant growth in industrial and agricultural production, higher socio-economic development; and so on.The rise and decline of Schistosomiasis control in Hunan during the period 1966-1978 is worthy of our careful consideration, At the same time, the historical experience and lessons of Schistosomiasis control in this period provide some reference for our work today to carry out schistosomiasis cotrol.
