Objective To observe clinical therapeutic effectiveness and adverse reaction in the treatment of malignant pleural effusion by injection to thoracic cavity with lentinan, Interleukin-2 and interferon-γ.Methods Thoracentesis was performed in 72 patients with malignant pleural effusion, and single lumen central venous catheter (purchased from Arrow Company, US) was inserted in the patients for closed drainage of the pleural fluid. Following a maximum release of thoracic cavity fluid, lentinan 6mg, Interleukin-21 million units and interferon-y 1 million units could be injected in,2 or 3 times a week for 2 to 3 weeks. Evaluate the efficacy, quality of life and adverse reactions after 1 month. Results Sixty-eight in the seventy-two cases of patients could be given an objective evaluation of the efficacy and safety. All the PR or CR patients had improvement in characteristics of pleural fluid:Color becomes lighter or becomes yellow from the bloody.59 cases of complete recover (CR),8 cases of partial recover (PR),0 cases of no change (NC) with a 100% objective efficiency rate(RR). After treatment, the KPS scores for all the patients were ranged from 60 to 90, up by an average of more than 10 scores as compared with before treatment, and all patients had significant improvement in the quality of life. Adverse reactions were fever and chest pain, accounting for 58.82% (40/68) and 8.82% (6/68), all the patients can tolerate it without special treatment. Conclusions Intrapleural injection of lentinan, interleukin-2 and interferon-y can better control the malignant pleural effusion to reduce the clinical symptoms and improve the quality of life. It has a good effect in treating malignant pleural effusion with less adverse reactions.
