Objectives To investigate the expression of RAGE in NPC (nasopharyngeal carcinoma) and relationship with microvessel density, level of differentiation and lymph nodes metastasis. Discuss the functional and clinical meaning of RAGE in the development and progression of NPC.Methods 106 specimens of NPC tissues and 56 normal nasopharyngeal tissues were evaluated the expression of RAGE with immunohistochemistry. Microvessel counts was measured by CD34 staining. Results There are higher RAGE and MVD expression in NPC tissues than that in normal tissues. The difference is significant(P<0.01). Expression of RAGE in patients with lymph nodes metastasis showed higher than those without metastasis. Expression of RAGE correlates positively with MVD(r=0.89). There is no significant difference of RAGE detected in specimens classified as differentiated, poorly differentiated and undifferentiated. Conclusions RAGE may promote metastasis in NPC by inducing angiogenesis. It maybe serves as a potential therapeutic target in NPC.
