Objective:To investigate the clinical characteristics, efficiency of radiotherapy and prognosis of the elder patients with esophageal cancer. Methods:We enrolled 300 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) who received radiotherapy in our hospital from January 2003 to January 2008.they were divided into two groups for different age equally, elder group and non-elder group respectively. And the survival rates and its related prognostic factors were evaluated retrospectively, using SPSS 16.0 software. Results:The efficiency of radiotherapy between two groups was 73.3%,91.3% respectively, and the Chi-square test showed that there was significant difference of the two groups (χ2=16.500, P=0.000). And there was some relativity between the efficiency of elder group and chemotherapy (χ2=10.745, P=0.001) and radiation dose (χ2=7.876,P=0.005), and the efficiency of non-elder group had a relation with the ethnic group (χ2=14.081,P=0.001). The survival analysis:The median survival time of two groups were 42 months,41 months respectively, and the log-rank method showed that there was no significance (χ2=0.003, P=0.954). And the COX regression analysis showed that the patients who received dose of radiotherapy overtaking 60Gy had a better prognosis than the ones less 60Gy (P=0.000,95%CI:0.251-0.445).And the patients whoes efficiency reached remission had a better prognosis than the ones had not (P =0.001,95%CI:1.339-2.885).They were the independent factors which influenced the elderly patients' prognosis, conclusion:Compared with the non-elder group, the elder group's efficiency of radiotherapy was lower than the non-elder group. And the radiotherapy dose and the efficiency were closely related to the patients' prognosis, which were the esophageal cancer's independent factors.
