Shui Qie (Solanum torvum Swartz), alternately named as Jin Niu Kou, Shan Dian Qie, Ci Qie, Ya Qia, Jin Niu Tou, Jin Shan Kou, widely distributes in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Fujian and Taiwan provinces, and its root has been used as a traditional chinese herb to treat traumatic pain stasis, lumbar muscle strain, hemoptysis and some kind of sore. Some chemical work has been reported early.Through the research literature related to Solanum torvum Swartz, we found no any study on its EtOAc fraction from the 95% ethanol extract at home and abroad. So, we had systematically investigated the chemical constituents on the EtOAc fraction from Solanum torvum Swartz.21 compounds had been isolated from the fraction. By means of spectroscopic techniques as well as physical and chemical properties, the structures of 21 compounds were elucidated as N-trans-feruloyl tyramine (1), N-trans-P-coumaroyl tyramine (2), 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-N-[2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-methoxyethyl]-acrylamide (3), N-trans-P-coumaroyl octopamine (4), kaempferol, (5), quercetin (6), trans-caffeic acid (7), solagenin 6-O-(β-D-quinovopyranoside) (8),solagenin 6-O-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→3)-β-D-quinovo-pyranoside] (9),torvoside M (10),neochlorogenin 6-O-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3)-β-D-quinovopyranoside] (11),β-sitosterol (12), soya-cerebrosideⅠ(13), torvoside K (14), torvoside L (15), neochlorogenin 6-O-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1→3)-β-D-glucopyranoside] (16), neochlor-ogenin 6-O-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→3)-O-β-D-quinovopyranoside] (17), solanolide 6-0-(β-D-quinovopyranoside) (18), solanolide (19), isorhamnetin-3-O-(β-D-glucopyranoside) (20) and quercetin-3-O-(β-D-glucopyranoside) (21). Among these compounds, compounds 16 and 18 are new steroidal saponins, compound 3 is firstly reported as a new natural product, compounds 1~7,13,16 and 18~21 are isolated from Solanum torvum Swartz for the first time.
