Clinical cervical disease is a common and frequently-occurring disease, with nerve root type being the most common, accounting for about 60% to 70% of cervical disease. Because of cervical disc, cervical spondylosis or facet hook joint hyperplasia, hypertrophy of the bone spurs laterally, stimulating and compressing the corresponding level of nerve root. As a result, a series of corresponding segments of the nerve root are irritated or dysfunctioned as the clinical manifestations, referred to as the nerve root type cervical spondylosis. In recent years, with the acceleration of pace of life, the nature of work and lifestyle change significantly compared with the past. The popularity of computer adds significantly the chances of cervical flexion. In addition, air conditioning, fans and other equipments are widely used, making people vulnerable to the invasion of wind-cold damp pathogen, Consequently, the incidence of disease increases year by year, and the age of onset is getting earlier. Nerve root type cervical spondylosis seriously affects people's life and work. It will spread the pain to the upper arm, the medial edge of forearm (medial border of forearm) and fingers if it is not controlled in time. In severe cases, it affects sleep. The disease is difficult to cure. It not only inflicts pain on the patients in the long run, but also imposes heavy economic burden on the family and society. Thus, it draws more and more extensive social and medical attention.Study purposeBy observing the clinical efficacy of acupuncture combined with point sticking therapy for nerve root type cervical spondylosis, a new idea for the clinical treatment of this disease has been developed. Research MethodsReferring to the diagnostic criteria of the nerve root type cervical spondylosis in the Chinese Herbal Medicine Treatment Guidelines for Clinical Studies of Cervical Disease issued by the PRC State Food and Drug Administration in 2002,90 cases, diagnosed as nerve root type cervical spondylosis from January 2010 to December 2010, are selected from the Acupuncture Department of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, and the acupuncture clinics and in-patient departments of the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, the First Affiliated Hospital. Those cases were randomly divided into three groups based on random number table, namely, treatment group (acupuncture cupping and acupoint application group), control group 1 (acupuncture and cupping application group) and control group 2 (acupoint application group). The points of treatment group are DASHU, BAILAO, FENGCHI, which are coupled。And the points are Jiaji points that based on the Clinical symptom and X-ray of Cervical vertebrae, and the main points are the fifth, sixth, seventh Jiaji points. After acupuncturing the points, cupping five minutes on Jiaji points of Cervical vertebrae, and DAZHUI. The main points of acupoint application (chuan-san-hai chinese herbal external usage) are Jiaji points of Cervical vertebrae on the Governor Vessel. Each group treatment was carried on two times every week. One course is five weeks. The result value will be carried on after finishing one course. Observing and recording the symptoms and signs before and after the treatment of the three groups of patients, the outcomes were compared between pre-treatment and post-treatment, and then the three groups of treatment were evaluated.ResultsAccording to clinical observation, the overall efficacy of the treatment group is better than the efficacy of other two control groups (P<0.05). After the treatment, the score of VAS in every group declined. It expressed that the three methods can reduce the degree of pain; the difference of decline score by T test had noticeable statistical significance (P<0.05); the difference that treatment group and other contrast groups had noticeable statistical significance (P<0.05); It expressed that the effect of treatment groups was the best. After the treatment, the score of symptom and physical sign of each group declined, and the degree of score decline had noticeable statistical significance (P<0.05); It expressed that the three treatments all can ameliorate the degree of symptom and physical sign; the difference that treatment group and other contrast groups had noticeable statistical significance (P<0.05); It expressed that the effect of treatment groups was the best. The differences in pain scores among the three groups all declined, with the best pain relief in the treatment group. Comparing the pre-treatment and post-treatment, the points of symptoms and signs declined for all three groups of patients. The treatment group was significantly better than the other two control groups.ConclusionsThe method of acupuncturing and acupoint application can effectively treat the Cervical spondylosis, as a new method for acupuncturing combined modality therapy. Acupuncture and acupoint application of nerve root type cervical spondylosis was effective in relieving pain, secure and worthy of further promotion. Jinsanzhen (Jin style with three points) and chuan-san-hai chinese herbal external usage acupoint application have a good healing effect for the nerve root type cervical spondylosis. The method of Jinsanzhen comparing dialectic selecting points can remarkably reduce the degree of pain. The method of chuan-san-hai acupoint application also has better effect and can be developed widely.
