Purpose To assess multifocal visual evoked potential (mfVEP)recovery in successfully treated monocular amblyopes. Methods MfVEP were recorded from 32 successfully treated monocular amblyopes(strabismic amblyopia, anisometropic amblyopia and combined strabismic and anisometropic amblyopia) 6 to 15 years of age and 30 normal children 7 to 17 years of age. The latency and amplitude density of P waves from different eccentric rings(lring,2ring,3ring,4ring) in amblyopic eyes was compared with the fellow eyes and normal eyes. Results Comparison between the amblyopic and the fellow eyes showed no significant difference in the latency and amplitude density of P waves from different eccentric rings in both upper and lower hemifields(P>0.05); The latency of P waves from four eccentric rings in both upper and lower hemifields were prolonged in comparison with amblyopic eyes and normal eyes, and the same result was found between fellow eyes and normal eyes(P<0.05). The amplitude density of P waves from four eccentric rings in both upper and lower hemifields were no significant difference in comparison with amblyopic eyes and normal eyes, and that the same result was found between fellow eyes and normal eyes(P>0.05).Conclusions 1. With visual acuity restored to normal levels, the latency and amplitude density of P waves in successfully treated amblyopic eyes recovered to the same level with the fellow eye.2.Successfully treated amblyopic eyes and fellow eyes showed significantly longer latency than did normal eyes, suggesting the visual pathway and the visual cortex were abnormal.3. No significant difference in amplitude density of P waves in successfully treated amblyopic eyes, fellow eyes and normal eyes, indicated that amplitude density of P waves restored earlier to normal level than did the latency in successfully treated monocular amblyopes.
