Objective:To study the base of tongue cancer cases to analyze lesions under the nasopharyngeal fiberscope and their pathological types in the postoperative clinical manifestations to explore the significance of nasopharyngeal fiberscope in the diagnosis of tongue base carcinoma.Material and methods:Clinical records of 38 patients with tongue base carcinoma were investigated. Among the records are 30 male patients and 8 female ones. The initial symptoms are:bump in tongue and oropharyngeal mass with pain in 26 cases, oral ulceration in 7 cases, swallowing discomfort in 3 cases, neck mass in 2 cases. The performance of endoscopic lesions under the nasopharyngeal fiberscope, histology pathological type, clinical stage and other factors were analyzed. Results:Pathological diagnosis:In addition to one case of adenoid cystic carcinoma, one case of basal cell adenocarcinoma and 4 cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, the rest are squamous cell carcinoma. Nasopharyngeal fiberscope findings:5 cases with no obvious abnormality, 9 cases with follicular hyperplasia,18 cases with irregular bulges,6 with ulceration on the surface of the base of the tongue.Endoscopic Diagnosis: No obvious abnormality in 5 cases,9 cases of chronic pharyngitis,24 cases of tongue tumor. Clinical classification of TNM staging:2 cases inâ… period,13 cases inâ…¡period,11 cases inâ…¢period, and 12 cases inâ…£period. Lesions violated the epiglottis Valley and epiglottis of the lingual surface was five cases, and lesions'involving the 2/3 front of the tongue was 11 cases. The sensitivity of endoscopic diagnosis compared with pathological results is 63.1%,the confidence interval was [0.478, 0.784].Conclusion:The operation of the nasopharyngeal fiberscope is quick and easy, its vision clear and the cost low. Moreover, it can reduce the pain and get immediate imaging data of specimens. It is a clinical tool suit for screening base of tongue cancer. The study finds that manifestations of lesions under the nasopharyngeal fiberscope and postoperative pathologic examination results have no significant correlation and they are not highly sensitive to submucosal lesions at the base of tongue cancer, so we should supplement with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and etc, so as to increase the accuracy in the diagnosis.
