Objective: To investigate the relationship between microalbuminuria(MAU) and atherosclerosis of common carotid artery (CCA) and Ankle-brachial Index(ABI) in patients with essential hypertension( EH). Methods: 215 patients of EH were divided into two groups according to the MAU level . 116 patients were normoalbuminuria group , 99 patients were MAU group. MAU were measured by immune nephelometry and turbidimetry;IMT and ABI were measured by color Doppler ult rasound. The SBP,DBP, MAU,C-IMT,incidence of plaque, ABI, inner diameter of carotid, creatinine (Cr),triglyceride (TG),total cholesterol (TC) , low-density lipoprotein(LDL) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) in serum of these two groups were analysed and compared. Results: (1)The level of MAU in the MAU group was significantly higher than that in the NAU group ( P <0.05); ABI in the MAU group was significantly lower than that in the NAU group ( P <0.05).There were no significant differences in these two groups about SBP,DBP, FBG, TG,TC, LDL and Cr( P> 0.05).(2) The IMT of CCA and incidence of plaque in the MAU group was significantly thicker than that of the NAU group( P <0.05) , There were also no significant differences in these two groups about inner diameter of carotid( P>0.05).(3) There were positive correlations between level of MAU and C-IMT(r = 0.551, P < 0.05 ); There were negative correlations between level of MAU and ABI(r = -0.266, P < 0.05 ). Conclusion: MAU is closely related to C-IMT and ABI in patients with EH ,which hints the level of MAU is not only related to renal disease ,also used as an early significant index of atherosclerosis in inferior clinical period in the EH patients.
