In recent years, numerous studies have investigated a striking memory illusion by DRM paradigm. But few of these studies have involved bilingual participants and cross-language effects in false memory. We adopt DRM paradigm under different list length to investigate false memories across languages of less proficient Chinese English bilinguals. In addition, we explore effect of conscious retrieval and automatic retrieval in false memories across languages. In this study, three experiments were conducted:Experiment 1 studied differences of the false memory between long list length and short list length under verbatim processing, which adopted a 2×2×3 mixed factorial design, list type (studied words, critical lures, unrelated words)and language congruence (the same languages between study and test, different languages between study and test) were within subject design and list length (long list length, short list length) was a between subject design; Experiment 2 studied differences of the false memory between long list length and short list length under semantic processing, which adopted a 2×2×3 mixed factorial design, list type (studied words, critical lures, unrelated words)and language congruence (the same languages between study and test, different languages between study and test) were within subject design and list length (long list length, short list length) was a between subject design; Experiment 3 adopted the Processing and Dividing Procedure (POP) of Jacoby and was designed by blending three factors of 2×2×3 mixed factorial design, list type (studied words, critical lures, unrelated words)and retrieval method (conscious retrieval, automatic retrieval) were within subject design and language congruence (the same languages between study and test, different languages between study and test) was a between subject design. Results of the three experiments indicated that: 1,False recognition could be replicated using less proficient Chinese-English bilinguals.2,In verbatim processing condition, (false) recognition of critical lures was more frequent in the within-language than between-languages conditions, regardless of whether the list length is long or short, In semantic processing condition, (false) recognition of critical lures was more frequent in the between-languages than within-language conditions, regardless of whether the list length is long or short.3,In verbatim processing condition, (false) recognition of critical lures was more frequent in the long list length than the short list length, regardless of whether is the within-language or between-languages conditions. In semantic processing condition, the list length does not affect (false) frequent recognition of critical lures. The accuracy of memory is affected not only activation in the period of encoding, but also monitoring, which happened in the testing period4,We depend on automatic retrieval more than conscious retrieval in false memories across languages of less proficient Chinese-English bilingual.
