As one of the four classic Chinese works,Shui Hu Chuan enjoys a great reputation at home and abroad. It is considered to be a live dictionary displaying the overall characteristics of the humanity in the feudal society. It has been translated into many languages and exerts as significant influence in the field of world literature.Effective intercultural communication has become one important factor to drive world peace and human being developing on globalization day. Different cultures contact, communicate and collide more frequently. Cultural conflict has become one important problem on the globalization course. One important reason of cultural conflict and crisis is short of understanding to each other culture differences and intercultural communication thought. Under this background, the intercultural communication study of Pearl S.Buck who had gain Nobel Prize and made creativeness contribution to Chinese and Western cultural exchange in 20th has more theory value and practical or immediate significance.Mrs. Buck's translation of Shui Hu Chuan is not valued and praised in a very long period. And the researches of All Men are Brothers are not enough. Through the comparison of the text, I pay attention on the contributing factor of Pearl S.Buck's re-creative translation. I will comprehensively use of literary history, translation studies; cultural studies, comparative literature theory and other related disciplines and draw lessons from the existing research results of All Men are Brothers. Pearl S. Buck is taken as a researcher, a translator and a propagator of Chinese ancient literature in this thesis.I wish we will have the inspiration through comparing the translations, comprehend what we should do in translating the Chinese ancient literature, and then we could carry on our cross-cultural communication better. The innovation of this paper can be divided into three parts. The first part introduces Pearl S.Buck's growth experience, her literary creation and the research of Chinese fiction. Pearl S.Buck is like a bridge between eastern and western culture. She not only writes the novel in Chinese theme, does theoretical studies of Chinese ancient fiction, but also commits herself to two-way exchange of eastern and western culture. Second, I will pay attention to the comparison of Shui Hu Chuan and All Men are Brothers in an attempt to understand the style and characteristics of Mrs. Buck's translation. The title, the content choice, and the method of word-for-word translation which she adopts all tell us that she does her best to show the original appearance of Chinese culture to the western readers, although there are some inadequacies. Besides, I will consider the reasons of her recreation in three bearings—the social background, Mrs. Buck's attitude of culture and the theory of translation she resorts to. And I think the latter two are the deciding factors. At last I will take the fiction All Men are Brothers as an example to analyze the problems we face in the cross-cultural communication and how to insist on our own traditional features. Afterwards the paper regards the translator as a principal part, and approaches this problem from purpose and method of the translation. My master's thesis is on the basis of the comparison between the All Men are Brothers and Shui Hu Chuan, and explores the contributing factor in Pearl S.Buck's re-creative translation and the revelation of cultural exchange between east and west. Translation decides the quality of cross-cultural literary dissemination. It is not only the medium of cultural contacts, but also reflects the penetrating diversities in different cultures. I believe the translation of Chinese ancient literature should employ many different ways. So when we combine readability and artistry, the discrepancy of global culture will maintain.
