Textbook which is seen as a resource in achieving aims and objectives can influence many aspects in the process of language teaching and learning. New Horizon College English published by Prrfessor Zheng Shutang and Experiencing English pubilished by Professor Kong Qingyan are two sets of widely-used English textbooks, both of which are first published in 2002. And the second edition of the two textbooks is published in 2008 and 2006. Today the relative comparative analysis of these two textbooks in writing is sparse and needs to be developed. The evaluation of textbook is a job with great challenge. College English Curriculum Requirements provides a primary basis as well as sets the goals for college English teaching. This thesis attempts to make a comparative analysis of the second edition of New Horizon College English and Experiencing English. It aims to evaluate how well the using of the two textbooks achieved the goals and objectives set by College English Curriculum Requirements, as well as to examine the usability, applicability, adaptability, flexibility and weakness of the two textbooks. This paper is aimed to make a reasonable comparison on two textbooks by associating what happened in actual teaching situation with some information collected from the textbooks themselves, which I hope can help teachers to understand textbooks better and can be the reference for teaching and compiling textbooks in the future. There are six chapters in this thesis as follows:The first chapter summarizes the value and the main idea of this research as well as the research methods adopted in the thesis. The second chapter is a brief introduction of the two textbooks from the respects of its compiling guidelines, organization & design and its editorial quality. The third chapter, I give the initial evaluation of the two textbooks. I make a complete comparison and analysis in the aspect of the discourses and language contents. The fourth chapter is the comparison in the aspect of cultivation of language skills which includes listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, which will perceive some other functions of the textbooks beyond developing students'intelligence. The fifth chapter raises the further thought of the comparative research on the effects of the textbooks through questionnaire and interview research. The sixth chapter is the conclusion part. It is the major findings of the research and I will make some suggestions on how the teachers use the textbooks and put forward some advice on how to improve the arrangement of the textbooks in the future. The results of the research indicate New Horizon College English and Experiencing English are two sets of textbooks that basically accord with the College English Curriculum Requirements. The language content and the topics of the books are well accepted by the teachers and students. It has great applicability and flexibility on the aspect of design, organization and skills-training. However, there is not sufficient section in integrated skills-training. The lack of learning methodology and strategy is also the insufficiency of the two textbooks. I hope this thesis will give some useful suggestions for the editing and teaching of the textbook. I also hope to explore the approach of textbook using to improve English language teaching in the future.
