Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) emerged in the 1980s. It is a new teaching approach put forward by linguists, psychologists, and applied linguists after their research and practice. The main idea of task-based language teaching is to transform the language learning into the process of completing tasks, during which the focus is not only on language itself, but also on the learning process. Task-based language teaching places great emphasis on"learning by doing". Learners are encouraged to be fully involved in tasks, and to learn language by interacting communicatively and purposefully. As a new teaching approach, task-based language teaching has been widely adopted by elementary and secondary school educators in China with rewarding outcomes. While there is much literature on theories and applications of task-based language teaching, little research has been done to explore its effect on the teaching of Integrated English for English majors in China. The Integrated English is a course which trains the comprehensive skills, and it aims to teach systematic basic language knowledge (pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, textual structure, function/notion, etc.) and to develop the students'basic ability to communicate in English. It also aims to offer students learning strategies and lay a solid foundation for further study. The study probes into the feasibility of applying task-based language teaching in the Integrated English Course theoretically and practically. The teaching experiment was carried out to prove the effect of applying task-based language teaching. Various instruments such as interview, questionnaires, pre-test and post-test were employed to facilitate data collection and analysis. The focus of this study is on exploring the advantage of task-based language teaching over the Present—Practice—Produce (PPP) approach in improving students'comprehensive English proficiency, learning interest, autonomouse learning and communicative ability. The results of the research show that compared with traditional teaching approach, TBLT has an advantage not only in improving students'comprehensive English proficiency, but also in developing their motivation and interest, learning autonomy and collaboration.
