D. H. Lawrence was a famous and important British novelist in the early 20th century. He moved from place to place during his life, who was always a controversial figure in British literature history, and his works were often not understood by people. His critique of modern industrial civilization, the rebel of Christian tradition, the attention on gender relations theme, and the exploration of human unconscious contributed to his fame as an important modernist writer. His Women in Love was acknowledged as the important creation by the Western literary, and Lawrence himself thought it was"a record of the profoundest experiences in the self".This paper mentioned "whole man" includes two meanings: own personal integrity and interpersonal relationship integrity.Part one is image analysis of Gerald. Analysis of Gerald's death is that the product of individual choices and family fate. Industrial giant embodies the image of death. Gerald has no friend, and does not make friends with others, because he can't believe in others and not truly love somebody. But he is unable to complete the soul to love Gudrun, and this ultimately wrecked his life.Part two, the different choices of love show different understandings of"whole man" by three modern women. Hermione serves her beloved and seeks perfect communion of oneness with him. Gudrun loves freedom more than the love of Gerald. Ursula seeks whole love between man and woman that is sacred and profane.Part three is features of"whole man". Sticking up for their own instinctive feelings, not enslaved by civilization, and making perfect connection between man and woman are vital to"whole man".The pursuit of D. H. Lawrence's life was that personal integrity, respect for life, and the harmony with each other, especially between man and woman. He expected social system and basic living conditions and ideas were changed by changing interpersonal relationships.
