The thesis focuses on National Qingdao/Shandong University between 1930 and 1937. It describes the literati's flow to and away from Qingdao in the early 1930s by using the newspapers and documents of Qingdao and letters and dairies of the people concerned, to explain the literature ecological status of Qingdao and its complex identity as Shandong's culture center and China's "culture border town".The thesis consists of six parts. The introduction expounds the research objects and the topic's significance of this thesis, pointing out that Qingdao of the early 1930s can be studied as a case of cities different from Beijing and Shanghai which are the two nationwide culture centers of modern China. And to some extent, Qingdao and National Qingdao/Shandong University can be seen as representative of emerging costal cities (especially treaty port cities) and locally national universities.Chapterâ… describes the preparation and establishment of National Qingdao University by observing two crucial questions:why Qingdao was chosen as the location city of the university and why Yang Zhensheng was recommended as the first president of the university. And then, I focus my discussion on Yang Zhensheng's education idea and school-running measures so as to show the developing process of National Qingdao/Shandong University between 1930 and 1937.Chapterâ…¡describes the literati's transfer between Qingdao and Shanghai and Peiping, such as Yan Zhensheng, Wen Yiduo, Liang Shiqiu, Shen Congwen, Lao She, Hong Shen and so on. This part observes their activities when they were in Qingdao, so as to find the contrast between their diasporic, temporary resident status and their psychological identification with the culture centers such as Peiping and Shanghai, and to show the interrelation between Qingdao, the "culture border town", and Shanghai/Peiping, China's nationwide culture centers.Chapterâ…¢mainly studies Shen Congwen, Lao She and Hong Shen's writing and publishing during their Qingdao period, Zang Kejia's new poem writing under Wen Yiduo's support and instruction, and then shows the young students'Left-wing literary and artistic activities. This chapter describes the ecological status of literature in the university through professors and students, and emphasizes Qingdao's status as China's "culture border town". This chapter also moves outside the university, describing the local literati's literature activities in Qingdao at that time, among whom Wang Tongzhao is an important object. By researching their efforts to establish Qingdao's literature scene and Qingdao's local supplements, Chapterâ…£is arranged to show the relatively isolated condition between National Qingdao/Shandong University and Qingdao's local culture environment and to further explain why Qingdao did not become one of culture centers of China. The peroration sums up the discussion of the thesis, and points out Qingdao's feature as "literati habitat" and "culture border town" during the early 1930s. When Shandong University was relocated to Jinan in 1958, Qingdao lost the possibility of becoming another culture center.
