One of the brightest lights in music of the twentieth century, Sergei Rachmaninoff was a great composer of his time,a masterful symphony conductor and a legendary pianist. Rachmaninoff is considered the last in the great tradition of Russian romantic composers.The establishment and development of Rachmaninoff's romantic style, is not only depended by his own temperament and idea, but also by the artistic environment where he lived in. Firstly, this thesis is started by researching on the fluctuating artistic career of Rachmaninoff, the unique history culture and natural scenery of Russia, and the works of Russian musicians that influence his creation. We find that the music of Rachmaninoff who lives in the late Romantic periods not only inherits the musical traditions of Glinka, the Mighty Five, and Tchaikovsky, which are expressing sincere and simple emotion, drawing natural views and local conditions of Russia, and manifest the love of their motherland and hometown, but because of the impact of various arts emerging in the turn of the century, his music also forms his own unique romantic style. Then, this thesis analyzes the following six aspects of the Rachmaninoff's works that are the most representative:Poem, Visualization, Programmatics, Orientalisme, Religion and Conbination of art and skill, and shows the characterisics of the Rachmaninoff's romantic style. Finaly, base on the previous analysis, this thesis deduces Etudes-Tableaux Op.39. This set of works which includes the peoms of love, nature and death and refects the unique romantic style of "Poetic heart sing" that Rachmaninoff is pursuing is embeded with the composer's dream, belief and other romantic elements and penetrated in peformance.By analyzing the romantic and fascinate style in Rachmaninoff's works, this thesis reaches and inspires us thinking of the deep soul of the composer, shows and analyzes inward world and humanity reflected by the works, then makes known the Rachmaninoff's unique romantic creative knot.
