As the flagman of the Japan's new movie movement, the film directed by Shunji iwai is provided with strong qualities of writer, he came to be known as image's writer. Nowadays,the research of Shunji iwai's films is fationable, investigater have analysed his films from the different dimentions, such as narrative idiosyncrasy, the style of camera language, psychoanalysis, existentialism, and so on, however, no one attempted to research in the view of semiology. So I choose it to explore his film style by the visual field of semiology. I want to analyse his film from a new dimention, including the elements of symbol,the features of combination, the constuction of symbol, signans and designatum, metaphor and symbol, the qualities of writer that existed in his films, make a comprehensive research with the style of his camera language, especially the character of the symbol, hope for filling in a gap of the research. It is the significance of this subject.In the paper, I'll use the theory of linguistics by Ferdinand de Saussure and the theory of semiology by Christian Matz and Umberto Eco to analyse Shunji iwai's films.And I want to grasp the features of semiology in his films based on the alteration from the first film Semiotics to the second film Semiotics. Through analysing the element of symbol, the application of combination, and the construction of the symbol, I'll decode the symbolism in his film.Generally, this paper is separated into five parts. Part one is foreword, in this part, I'll sum up the research production with Shunji iwai's films at present in Academia, and sketch the influences that Japanese culture exerted on Japan's films.In part two, I'll retrospect the theory of Semiology and Shunji iwai's films, relating to the theory of semeiology by Christian Matz and Umberto Eco (including syntagmatique and three-layer segmentation),the authorities in semiology community, and have a brief analyse on the feature of Shunji iwai's films. Part three is the emphases of paper, in this part,â… 'll use the theory of semeiology to make a concrete analysis with the symbolism of Shunji iwai's films, based on the element of symbol,the features of combination, the constuction of symbol existed in his film respectively, and decode the symbol simultaneously. Part four is aim at analyse the style of his camera language and esthetics' pursuit, I prepare to analyse his unique mode about the constuction of symbol through the two aspect mentioned above. And the last part is epilogue, in this part, I'll make a summary about the style of Shunji iwai's films and it's characteristics of symbol. Through the five parts, I wish for a precise analysis about the feature of semeiology exsisted in Shunji iwai's films, and go a step further about the style of his camera language and esthetics'pursuit.With the development what lasting several centurise, semiology have already formatted it's rudiment. Despite there are some disputes aboat the necessity of the exist of semiology, in general, it still valueable for research. As a tool, semiology is reasonable, it is feasible to analyse films by dint of semiology.
