The purpose of the thesis is to explore the postmodernist narrative features in Last Orders. The present author's analysis of the narrative strategy in Last Orders centers on two postmodernist narrative forms:focalization and fragmentation.Focalization, the diachronic dimension of the thesis, is analyzed on the basis of the narrative discourse theory of Gerard Genette. The term focalization, as subversion of the concepts narrative point of view and perspective, is analyzed in three categories: the internal focalization, the external focalization and the shifts and alterations of focalization.Fragmentation, the synchronic dimension, is interpreted within the analyzing system of focalization with the theoretical support of Ihab Hassan's and Linda Hutcheon's postmodernist literary theories.Based on the analysis of narrative techniques, the present author discusses the artistic significances of the narrative strategies in Last Orders. She argues that the narrative form of the text subverts the grand narrative pattern. By applying unique narrative techniques, Swift unravels the correlation between the narrative form and the content of the novel and pushes the meaning of the discourse onto an ontological level. Thus, Swift constructs a postmodernist narrative discourse displaying narratological innovations. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the postmodernist narrative features in Last Orders.
