In the history of Romantic Poetry in the nineteenth century, Wordsworth is a controversial and unique figure. His Poems are subtly influenced by modern civilization, which highlights the characteristics of aesthetic modernity. The present paper is to study the pursuit of aesthetic modernity in Wordsworth's poems from the following three aspects:the theme, the image feature, the causes and characteristics.First, To investigate the theme of Wordsworth's poems, this paper mainly focuses on how the emotional life pursuits their subjectivity in modern civilization. To study Wordsworth's correction and remediation in reaction to the confrontation between sense and sentiment, the separation of nature from civilization, the following aspects will be focused:the poetic life, the harmony between man and nature, nostalgic books and the salvation in daily life.Second, As to the analysis of image in Wordsworth's poems, this thesis fosuses on gardens, wilderness and prisons. The analysis shows that the gardens and wilderness are the ideal place for the poet to improve personality in modern civilization. Besides, they are also a rural paradise constructed at the edge of the city and a source to obtain the power of life. While what the image of prison presents to us is the limitation of modernization on humanbeings'rights. In his poems, Wordsworth expresses his reflection, criticism as well as his objection on the power space.Third, The study of the causes and the features of aesthetic modernity in Wordsworth's poems shows that they are not only influenced by the outer factors but also his pursuit for a unique personality. There is obviously an advancement in Wordsworth's poems and it can still shed some light to us today.
