| Since Dutch-Spanish Colonial Period (1624), the history of Chinese as a second language education in Taiwan has been developing about three hundred years. Because the regimes have changed frequently, Chinese as a second language education in Taiwan has unique features at different periods. This thesis discusses the backgrounds, general situations and features to the development history of Chinese as a second language education in Taiwan at three periods. The first is the "Embryonic Period" (1624-1955), it narrates the Han-Chinese assimilation education to Taiwan Aboriginal, the situation of Western missionaries learning Chinese in Taiwan during early time, and the Japanese Chinese education at the Japanese Colonization. The second is the "Growth Period"(1955-2003), it introduces the origin of institutions for teaching Chinese as a second language in early Taiwan, the Kuomintang Government's overseas Chinese education policy, and the situation of Chinese as a second language education after declaring martial law ended in Taiwan. The last is the "Development Period "(2003-2011), it summarizes various aspects of Chinese as a second language education in Taiwan in recent years, including the government agencies and language centers which promote Chinese as a second language education, the teacher training for teaching Chinese as a second language, the materials for Chinese as a second language education which are used commonly in Taiwan, the situation of overseas Chinese education in Taiwan currently, etc. In conclusion, it analysis the factors in history that influence the development of Chinese as a second language education, current status and the minefields of Chinese as a second language education in Taiwan, looking forward to opening a new way of thinking about Chinese as a second language education in Taiwan.There are two features of this thesis:1. About the temporal sweep, former investigators have traced the origin of Chinese as second language education in Taiwan to the nineteenth century. Compared to previous studies, this thesis traces to two hundred years earlier.2. This thesis is the pioneer that brings the Han-Chinese assimilation education to Taiwan Aboriginal and the Japanese Taiwan language education at the Japanese Colonization into the history of Chinese as a second language education in Taiwan. |
