Antonin Dvorak was one of the most Romanticism composers in the 2nd half the 19th century, and was also a leading composer of Czechoslovakian national music. He is known as a renowned composer for his Symphony No.9 (from New World), Cello Concerto in B Minor, Slavonic Dances and so on. Dvorak's musical composition focused on extreme lyricism, profound ideological thought and extensive national characteristics, he has made significant contribution to exuberance and development of European specialized musical composition. Dvorak's two sets of Slavonic Dances which were performed most made him rank among the top musicians. In composition of the two Dances, Dvorak made great contribution to artistic development of folk dance music by taking folk dance rhythm as the core and composing new melody, instead of directly adopting any existing folk music melody. However, with the development of compositional environment and overall music style of composers, the two sets of Slavonic Dances differ greatly in music style for a distance of eight years. Based on analysis of music patterns of the two Dances, a study on compositional background, as well as a comparison with dances composed by other composers in Romantic period, like Bedrich Smetana, Johannes Brahms etc., the dissertation presents a comprehensive and thorough insight of music style characteristics, historical position and artistic value of Slavonic Dances.
