| This thesis analyzes and studies the social functions of code-switching in literary works from the pragmatic perspective. The research is based on studies on sociolinguistics, the theory on the notion of code, genesis of code-switching, and the studies on code-switching by using the pragmatic approach both from the macro- and interactional- sociolinguistic perspective. However, such studies mainly focus on the conversational code-switching. In this case, the author analyzes and studies the social functions and some reasons of code-switching in literary works, expecting to deepen the understanding of code-switching in a different language conveyor and from a different perspective. In the thesis, the author chooses more than 150 articles involved in code-switching (Chinese- English) which cover a wide range of both topics and styles. According to the study, it is discovered that although there are some functions alike, written code-switching has a lot special ones. In addition, what we study ought not to be restricted on code-switching itself, or say, the linguistic study of code- switching, but on the social study of it. In particular, we should study the reaction and influence code-switching brings to the listeners or the readers? in order to decide if we should restrict or popularize the using of code- switching and thus make the communication easier, quicker and welcomed. |
