Under the guidance of the "quality-oriented education" it is necessary that we change the traditional teacher-centered approach in English Language Teaching (ELT). Then, this paper sets out to examine the objective of the learner-centered approach (LCA) and most importantly, the basic principles and the application of this approach in ELT. It is believed that the learner-centered approach can enhance students?motivation, develop their communicative competence and cultivate their autonomy. A call for teachers to pay more serious attention to treating students as whole persons rather than receptacles in ELT for the ultimate goal of the education is to train independent learners.
