AbstractL2 VOcabulary Knowledge Acquisition:A Cross-sectional Study on WOrd Meaning & CollocationBase on a vocabulary knowledge framework put fomrd by Richards and Nation,the present study investigates the develoPment of the dePth of vocabulary Anowledge.This study investigates how Chinese EFL learners at three different EFL Proficiencylevels acquire 2 tyPes of vocabulary knoWedge, name1y meanng and collocation,both recePtively and productively75 Chinese EFL university learners were testCd on their recePtive and productivemastery of the 2 tyPes of vocabulary knowledge fOr each of the 8 high frequencywords we chose as the test words. The following findings were obtained in the presentstudy f l) generally sPeaking, the subjects' total vocabulary kno\viedge highlycorrelates with their EFL proficiency levels both receptively and productively,suggesting a concurrent development in the dePth of vocabulary knowledge. 2) thesubjects' vocabulary Anowledge, on the Whole, correlates with their vocabulary size.Howevef, this does not suggeSt that a langr vocabulary size necessarily ends up witha deePer vocabulary knowledge. 3) there is a wide gaP between the subjects' recePtiveknowledge and productive knowIedge of the two tyPes of vocabulary knowledge,which may be due to both cognitive aspects and outside input in EFL leaming. 4)meaning Anowledge increases quickiy at low proficiency level While collocationknowledge develop faster at higher proficiency levels.
