The brief guide of eight tones and literal meaning in Jian Zhou was written in 1790's, by Lin Duancai, a man lived in Fu Qing. The book was written by imitating The Eight tones of Qi-Lin but it vividly reflected the north Min dialect in Qing dynasty. This thesis presents a comparatively systematic study on the Jian, in order to identify the sound system of the rhythm dictionary. We also make a comparison of Jian between the pronunciation of the pre-Qin days, Guang Yun, standard Chinese pronunciation and contemporary the north Min dialect. Thus we can show the function of Jian in study of the north Min dialect and the position o{ Jian in the history of Chinese pronunciation from different aspects. At last, the thesis also studys the different pronunciation system of Jian in written language and vernacular. The whole thesis is composed of six chapters.
