The purpose of this thesis is principally to supply college and university teachers of English from Jiang Huai Dialect areas with basic linguistic and phonetic theories as well as practical examples of how to do contrastive analysis in their teaching of English pronunciation.Chapter One introduces some of the concepts and phonological terms as well as the transcription systems (including the Cardinal Vowel Scale) which are to be used in this thesis.Chapter Two describes the sound system of Jiang Huai Dialect in comparison with that of Putonghua.Chapter Three describes the sound system of RP in comparison with that of Jiang Huai Dialect.Chapter Four supplies the major similarities and differences between the JH and RP systems with illustrations.Chapter Five focuses on both the positive and negative influences of Jiang Huai Dialect on RP learning and discusses the causes of the influence.Chapter Six, the last chapter of the thesis, is the conclusion of the piece of work, and what the writer aims at for further research.
