A Brief Consideration Of English Teaching In Teachers Colleges

The English departments of teachers colleges, being the cradles of teachers ofEnglish, have brought uP thousands of teachers for the English elementary education inour country for recent years. They have contributed a lot in popularizing as well as inimproving the English standards of primary schools and middle schools. The Englisheducation in teachers colleges has been developing quickly in recent years and it hasbought the result to the improvement of the overall qualities of the students. But thereare still some problems in English teaching in these teachers colleges.Based on the investigations and the reading of many relevan books and articles,the thesis objectively discusses and analyzes the basic situations of some teacherscolleges in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regions from the aspects of the course design,the teaching materials, the teaching methods and approaches. The thesis reveals theproblems which commonly exist in English teachers colleges in many good ways. Suchas there is no unified teaching matCrials; some matCrials are out of date, the teachingmodel is dull and the teaching methods are too traditional and the available modernmedia are sometimes unreasonable used, etc. The causes of these problems are not onlythe historical factof, but also the realistic factors.Along with the deepening of the reform and the open-to -the -o at s id e - wo rl d p o l icy,especially aller China's entry into WTO, the intemaional exchanges of our country wi1l. be with increasing frequency in the wider fields. Therefore, it is necessary for us to trainmore and more high-level talenis, especiaily the talents of English to meet the need ofour country. This means that English departments of teachers colleges, Which areundertaking the task to train the teachers of English, will face a heavy and honorablehistorical mission--bring up new type of talents of English teaching--thecompound talents who are possessed of ample elementary knowledge and goodqualities.The quality of education in a country, whether it is good or not, is closely related tothe existence and development of the country. Based on the analysis, the author, in PartIV of the thesis, mainly discusses the selection of the problems in English teaching. itwas pointed out that, according to their tasks and characters, teachers colleges should- endeavor to seek ways fOr the refOrm of English teaching with a realistic and creativespirit. First, the quality education is to be emPhasized and the curriculum should be seriously considered. In order to gear to the needs of the society in such a infOrmation times, new knowledge should be acquired quickly and greatly. Courses which are suitable and welcome by the students in teachers colleges should be given fOr thepurpose of satisfying their needs. Second, the teaching materials should be reformed.The teaching materials, being a fundamental basis fOr teaching, has the fUnction of!baton that guides our teaching and learning. In accordance with the needs ofteacher-training, the structure of teaching materials should be revised. New teachingcontenis and the contents which are kept abreast of the times should be added and theessence of the world culture should be properly assimilated. So that what the studentshave leamt is the updated knowledge. Third, the education ideo1ogy should be renewed.What the colleges do is not only to impart the knowledge to the students, but also to paymore attention to their moral education for the purpose of enabling them to have the' correct outlook on value, on life and of world; not only to train the languagecompetence and performance of the students, but also to train them to study on theirown; not only to train the students to have ability in analyzing an resolving problems,but also to train them to have ability in learning by themselves.
