Luyin and Xiaohong are women writers in the field of Chinese modern lyric novels. Both have legendary experiences and exceptional talent. The social darkness and their own misfortune shape their rebellious character and strong will. Misery and struggle are their common lyric theme. However, they display their unique artistic style because of different surroundings of the times, trends of thought in literature and personality. Affected by the romanticism popular at the early "May 4th "period, Luyin's style tends to be subjective and romantic while emerging in the 1930's Xiaohong inherits realistic revolutionary tradition initiated by Luxun and prefers to write realistic novels blended with some elements of local novels.Chinese modern lyric novel has been a dynamic development from Luyin and Xiaohong. Since the mid 1920's, the subjective and romantic style of Luyin has declined and to some extent, follows the traces toward realistic lyric. The local and romantic style of Feiming and Shen Congwen replaced instead. The local and lyric novel of Xiaohong became the mainstream of lyric novel in the 1930's with its strong sense of realistic mission and cultural introspection.
