On The Fuzziness Of Chinese And English Languages And The Relevant Translation

After Professor L. A. Zadeh, American automation control expert in University of California at Berkeley, had his famous paper "Fuzzy Sets" published in 1965, the research of fuzzy theory and its applications in the linguistics has been aroused thereby. In China, Professor Wu Tieping in Beijing Normal University introduced L. A. Zadeh's theory into China in 1979 and he himself has had more than 30 theses published on the theme of the language fuzziness, from which many Chinese linguists and researchers are inspired to this same theme.This thesis studies the fuzziness of Chinese and English languages and the relevant translation in four chapters.Chapter I discusses the widespread phenomenon of fuzziness, which aroused experts' interest in researching them. In China four books and more than 200 papers have been published discussing the fuzziness of languages from 1979 to 2002. Translation, therefore, as the conversion of languages, has to deal with fuzziness of languages.Chapter II demonstrates in both of the languages are fuzziness of words, numerals, phrases, idioms, proverbs and structures. It researches the fuzziness in poetic wording and rhetorical features, as well as in other literary works.Chapter III researches the fuzziness in C-E or E-C translation. The saint three-character norm by Scholar Ye Fu is questioned from both its connotation and extension. The comprehension diversity may be caused by the variety of the mode of thinking and the cultures, fuzzy expression in translation, therefore, will increase the accuracy of the target language as well as reproduce the lifelikeness and nimbus of both the source and target languages.Chapter IV talks on the fuzzy translation of Chinese and English languages. The semantic fuzziness can be achieved from the respects of equality, ellipsis, concretion or target-language-habitation, which is discussed in Section One. The fuzzy translation of the numerals by reservation, change, or ellipsis or them is due to Section Two. And Section Three shares the author's research and concept on the fuzzy translation of poetry and literature works.
