Poems on history in the mid and late Tang Dynasty are an outmoded topic ( study, but it still needs further discussion. Based on previous study, the thesis is t comprehensively explore the spiritual world, aesthetic features and artisti originality of the poems on history in the mid and late Tang Dynasty.The first section, the Spiritual World, is to discuss the different responses c poets to individual, society and mankind, and to analyze their existential conditio and psychological characteristics. It includes three parts. The first part, Chang of Intellectuals' feelings, inquires into the changing process of intellectuals' feeling from sentiment, hesitation to despair, and emphasizes intellectuals' consciousness o nation and society. The second part, An Indignant Song, chiefly analyzes th< complicated feelings of poets, who are at the lower rung of the political ladder anc are repeated met with setbacks, and gives prominence to the inducement that cause: poets to pay more attention to the individual destiny. The last part, Value of Being from the philosophical aspect taps the poets' pursuit of value of individual anc existence of mankind.The second section, Aesthetic Features, is to analyze the potential aesthetic psychology of poets and the external aesthetic characteristics, and to explore the changes of esthetics brought about by the changes of the times, from three aspects: beauty of sentiment, beauty of reason and beauty of human feelings. In respect of beauty of sentiment, at the level of perception, the paper probes into poets' sentimental psychology and analyzes the aesthetic characteristics from the facets of downfall of nation, poets' frustrated life and valueless existence of individual. In respect of beauty of reason, the paper probes into the aesthetic features at the level of reason, mainly from the angles of the philosophical speculation of poets to nation individual and mankind. In respect of beauty of human feelings, the paper points out the beauty of human nature reflected in the poems on history from aspects of the poets' sympathy to the bitter experience of the historical figures and the poets'solicitude for the emotion of historical figures.The last section, Artistic Originality, is to discuss the specific characteristics of the poems on history in the mid and late Tang Dynasty from the respects of reconstructing the concept of time amd space, trends towards discussion and implication, and to give prominence to the distinct artistic charm of the poems on history compared with poems of other times and of other types. This section also has three parts. The first part, Reconstructing Time and Space, analyzes the distinct charm of the poems on history from the perspective of time and space and points out the speciality of dealing with time and space contrasted with other types of poems. The second part, Trends toward Discussion, gives a further exposition of discussion in the poems on history in detail. The last part, Implication, discusses the artistic techniques employed in the poems.
