This thesis consists of four chapters.In the first chapter, we look back on and discuss the history and study methods on the study of Chinese cognate words. On one hand, we affirm the traditional study methods. On the other hand, we discuss the limits that they expose. And we also bring forward some elementary thoughts on Chinese cognate words' study. we believe that we have some basic study methods on the study of Chinese cognate words actually. But the system of language is not a closed one, it has crossing with many other subjects. Therefore, we should break through the study method which studys Chinese cognate words only from the language perspective. Finally, we make a conclusion that we should adopt two methods, namely description and explanation to sturdy them. The perspectives such as word figure culture and psychology are also useful to our study. They can make up for the limits on traditional study methods. In the second chapter, we select cognate words dictionary as the study object. Using the way of statistic analysis, we discuss the function that word figure plays on Chinese cognate words, and expound how to use it in study from two facets.In the third chapter, we elaborate the cultural factors that Chinese cognate words have. Meanwhile, we point out that exploring the cultural meaning is very meaningful on cognate word' study.In the last chapter, we learn from foreign theories such as metaphor and typical. From the psychological perspective, we explain the cognitive construction, and set forth some thought habits of originate people.
