English reading comprehension is the psychological process of absorbing and transforming information. Its purpose is to search for information. English reading is not simply to input information, what's more, to process and reorganize the information which have been stored in reader's mind. As for Chinese college students, English reading is not only the end of English learning, but also the means of it. For this reason, English reading skill is one of the most important competence which the English learners should have.English reading comprehension is the key criterion to evaluate English learner's overall level. It is also one of the most important activities in college English teaching. How we can improve college students English reading competence and reading skills and even make them read English effectively are difficult points in college English teaching all the time. To improve college students' English reading comprehension , the author thinks that teachers should probe all factors concerned which restrict the English reading competence of college students and further explore the students' learning styles, motivations and learning methods, therefore, they could apply proper teaching strategies into English teaching.In this paper the author first gives a brief account of three English reading models. They are Top-down model, Bottom-up model and Interactive model,which provide theoretical foundation for understanding the development process of English reading comprehension. After that, the paper aims at attempting to find the countermeasures to overcome the difficulties by analyzing some factors which result in students' learning difficulties in English reading, namely, psychological difficulties (cognitive style ,motivation, difficulties in culture (knowledge structure,culture difference) and difficulties in language competence. Then, the corresponding teaching strategies should be as follows: arouse students' interest and their intrinsic motivation in language learning, strengthen the learning of English cultural background knowledge and enhance the ability of language application, develop students' thinking mode in English and improve their English reading comprehension skills, increase students English reading speed and cultivate their good habit of English reading, innovate TEFL methods and innovate students English reading efficiency.
