Buddism is one of the three most polpular religions in the world. During its development of more than 2000 years, Buddism has exerted grand and profound influence on human culture, history and politics, etc, which is reflected by Chinese social history and distinctly by a branch of social history, Chinese art history. This thesis focuses on why buddisim gained prevalent acceptance in Wei, Jin, North and South Dynasty, given the background of frequent country-breakdowns, strong social vibrations and great plebeian tortures, how components of Chinese paintings from presentations, contents, techniques to theory changed under buddism thought and buddism paiting, and what creations the representative painters in this peak period left to their descendent peers. In the process of transmutation, many novel painting techniques and thoery were created, and their appearance and application, mingled with the thick deposit of traditional Chinese painting art, brought Chinese painting art to a new development stage. These achievements of Chinese painting art is tightly associated with the prosperity of Buddism in China. So it is aother topic in this thesis how Buddism painting expressed Buddism thought in art form, and the different development stages and their coherence of Buddism painting in China is dwelled in the thesis. The author tries to describe the transmuting route of Buddism painting in Wei, Jin, North and South Dynasty and reveal the inner motive of this transmutation, and tries to objectively evaluate the major role and its pervasive influence of Buddism painting in China' s art history.
