This work aims to clarify several issues concerning the Chinese learners' vocabulary strategy use from the learners' perspective. One reason for this is that most researches done in the last century on vocabulary learning strategies had its focus on individual or small number of strategies; on the other hand, large-scale studies which have been undertaken to assess what vocabulary learning strategies learners had used were mostly based on North American learners' perspective with the lack of relevant attention to Asian learners. In other words, most subjects of previous studies are English-speaking learners or Indo-European language learners.Through the present study, we will make it clear the pattern of usage of vocabulary learning strategies among Chinese learners and the helpfulness rate the learners perceive these strategies to be. These findings will also suggest the direction for current vocabulary teaching in China. That is communicative vocabulary teaching is not suitable at least for Chinese learners at present. We also discover that the perceptions of helpfulness rate of vocabulary strategy change as learners mature.
