The following text is a discussion of Hou Hsiao Hsien's art films. The main body of this version concludes two chapters, except for the introduction and the epilogue.The first chapter mentions three themes of Hou Hsiao Hsien's art films, which consisted of individual memory of youth, special vision of Taiwan history, and unfamiliar experience in big cities. The boys from Fengkuai, A Summer at Grandpa's, A Time to Live , A. Time to Die and Dust in the Wind told Hou Hsiao Hsien's experience, including his good friends Zhu Tian Wen and Wu Nian Zhen's before 1971. These films represented desertion of youth and puzzle of growth, slip of family and relief of feelings, living and death, which were the thoughts and impressions of Hou Hsiao Hsien's own. City of Sadness, The Pappet Master and good Men, good Women reviewed the history of Taiwan since 19 century, and raised the points of nation's location, nationalities being in perfect harmony, etc. Daughter of the Nile, Goodbye South, Goodbye, and Millennium Mambo told young person's lives in big cities, which was against to by the director.The second one discusses the style of Hou Hsiao Hsien's art films, which includes non-histrionic narrative, long take, light and shadow, amateur actors and incidental performance, shot in common use and sound. He broke narrative pattern and shot skill of old films in Taiwan, and formatted his own special style.In conclusion, Hou Hsiao Hsien is one of the excellent directors in the world. He is not only a pioneer of New Movie Movement in Taiwan, but a guide to introducing Taiwan films to the whole world. Being a movie author with humanism, he persists in his profound themes, unique aesthetics idea and individual shot style for a long time, and becomes a respected movie great master.
