In 1895 the Lumiere brothers train 'stop' declared the birth of the film to the world.Since then, the railway and the film forged a bond.The 'roaring' of the train image screen, inadvertently started the beginning of the railway on the screen.This image therefore is also accompanied by the film through its 'past life'.The creators of the film use the imaginary space brought by the railway imagery to convey the specific meaning they want to express,and therefore have the value of research.Through the analysis of the railway image in Hou Hsiao-hsien's film,this paper uses the code-decoding theory to explain the symbolic meaning hidden behind the railway image symbol.The introduction part introduces the research origin, the research object,the research method and the significance. The thesis begins with the first chapter, and summarizes the formation of Hou Hsiao-hsien's cultural standpoint and the formation of the film style.For Hou Hsiao-hsien's research, first from the geographical, personal knowledge background, historical environment and other analysis. Personal cultural position and its environment, personal growth experience can not be separated, so the first chapter need to start from the first.In the second chapter, we introduce the theory of Encoding and Decoding of Stuart Hall, and use the theory of Encoding and Decoding to analyze the railway images in Hou Hsiao-hsien's films, including the meaning of symbols,the injection of the meaning of the finished stage and the decoding of the railway images.In the third chapter, combining with the symbolic view of Goodman and Gumprich in the aesthetics,the author uses the theory of reproduction and expression in aesthetics to explain the symbolic meaning of the railway image.In Hou Hsiao-hsien's film, the railway is not just a kind of transportation, it is a symbol of various meanings. As an unbiased role in the film,witnessed the changes in Taiwan society.
